Replication and Upscaling

Experimental urbanism, European style, involves local experimentation with main urban infrastructural systems; energy, water and food, the so called “nexus”. DEMIR has been active over the board, but especially with the energy and food transitions towards more livable, sustainable and just urban environments that involve replication and upscaling of successful projects beyond project lifetimes. These transitions require not only technical and financial innovation and radical change but social and cultural acceptance and participative design processes which pave the way to successful replication and upscaling. Experimental urbanization needs policy and governance innovations to accompany them for widespread implementation and DEMIR has been able to put together significant capabilities to lead corresponding work in multi-national projects and introducing impressive local government capacity into these projects.

City GHG Inventory

Cities are estimated to be responsible for an estimated 75 percent of global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. Cities have the opportunity for tackling climate change with their financial and human resources. The first step for cities to acknowledge the potential is to identify and measure their emissions. This will provide a feedback to decide and prioritize mitigation actions.

Mitigation

Mitigating climate change is about reducing the release of greenhouse gas emission. Mitigation strategies include retrofitting buildings to make them more energy efficient; adopting renewable energy sources like solar, wind; helping cities develop more sustainable transport such as bus rapid transit, electric vehicles, and biofuels; and promoting more sustainable uses of land and forests.

Adaptation

Adapting to life in a changing climate – involves adjusting to actual or expected future climate. The goal is to reduce our vulnerability to the harmful effects of climate change (like sea-level encroachment, more intense extreme weather events or food insecurity). It also encompasses making the most of any potential beneficial opportunities associated with climate change (for example, longer growing seasons or increased yields in some regions).

DEMIR has been partners and leaders in Smart Cities and Communities – SCC projects starting from the very first generation of EU funded projects in 2014 in the 8th Framework Programme.
